Choose Vercel for a managed Next.js delivery system. Choose a DigitalOcean Droplet when a known VM envelope and infrastructure control fit the workload and the team is prepared to own the server lifecycle.
Do not confuse a Droplet with App Platform
A Droplet is a Linux virtual machine. DigitalOcean provides the compute, network primitives, monitoring options, and backup products, but it does not automatically recreate Vercel’s framework-aware deployments, previews, CDN, function scaling, or release controls.
That lower-level boundary is useful when custom processes, network topology, local storage, or direct runtime access matter. It is a liability when the team lacks time for patching, deployment safety, capacity planning, and recovery testing.
Build a comparable monthly model
Add Droplet compute, backups, snapshots, volumes, load balancers, databases, object storage, CDN, observability, transfer overages, and staff time. On Vercel, model the platform fee, deploying seats, function resources, transfer, requests, image usage, data services, observability, and add-ons actually used.
The winning option is the one that meets the same availability and recovery target at a cost the team can explain and operate.
